Man. What’s with these emperors putting all these “philosophers” to death? Are they that threatening, or annoying? Individuals a have a serious preoccupation of what others think about them to the degree where it becomes detrimental to their health in terms of chronic stress. This is a medical term to keep elevated levels of stress continuously over long periods of time. It’s actually called the “silent killer.” No stress is best. Up and down stress is second best. Elevated, continuous stress is deadly. And most people think that it is not dangerous because it appears controlled in that it is level. I know about this particular having worked with neurosurgeons in many hospitals. A little education about this can help you avoid early death, disability, and an uncomfortable life. The white threads are fine! 😊

Tyrants and oligarchs have always been threatened by intellectuals. On of the first things both Hitler and Mussolini did was going after academics. And then they burned books.

Also emperor Qing of China!! Oh he also buried all the workers/artisans/engineers who built his underground army.

This is why I don't have "loyalty" to businesses run by tyrannical CEOs.

does the use of purple here have any special meaning? after all, it is a color intended for rulers, but also to dye the fabric in this color was very expensive ( a pound of purple dye cost about half a Roman soldier’s annual salary, or the equivalent of the cost of a diamond engagement ring today). I understand that the idea is to stand out but also to add extra glamour to others, but it also sounds a bit like considering yourself better because "purple".

Eliza, the idea is that you want to stand out, given the context, for good reasons. Not because you are more wealthy, but because you are acting virtuously.
