I’ve told my Buddhist friends that I’m never more aware of the self as when I’m meditating and aware - that which is experiencing the very present moment, whatever it might be. I also agree that people misunderstand the Buddhist concept of no-self if they don’t understand the main idea of denying an eternal existence versus the idea of no self at all, as you mention.
